About the Book

This is a lyrical story about the rain. The authors use rhythmical and onomatopoeic language to describe the sound of rain, from its slow, soft, sprinkly beginning, into its dynamic crashing crescendo, and to its slow, slow stopping. This is a great book to use to teach children about weather, onomatopoeia, and/or sounds.

Learning Literacy

Oral Language

• Encourage the children to describe rainstorms they have experienced. Ask the children questions, such as, Which sounds do you remember? Was it a hard rain or a soft rain? What is the difference between a hard and soft rain?

Phonological Awareness/Print Awareness

• Make a list of all the onomatopoeic words (words that imitate the sounds they are describing) in the story. Challenge the children to use new onomatopoeic words to describe the rain.

Comprehension

• Ask the children the following questions: How were the sounds at the beginning of the rainstorm different from those in the middle of the story? Which of the rain sounds did you like the best? Why? What is the difference between a thunderstorm and a rainstorm? How do you feel on a rainy day?

Special Activities

• Encourage the children to catch raindrops in cups. Show the children how to measure the amount of rain they catch by putting craft sticks in the cups and marking the height of the water with markers. (Bodily-Kinesthetic, Logical-Mathematical)

• Show the children how to make mud pies. (Spatial, Interpersonal)

• Invite the children to jump over and in rain puddles, or jump over a drawing of a rain puddle. (Bodily-Kinesthetic)
